RYA Adult Level 1 Course

The perfect two-day course for anyone who wants to learn how to sail a dinghy.   Run over two days, our beginners courses demonstrates how to rig and launch your sailing boat, perform easy and simple sailing manoeuvres and techniques to get you under way and handling your boat with ease.

Land-based elements such as clothing, personal safety equipment, weather, rope work and tides support this course and provide essential background knowledge.  This course is the first stepping stone to your sailing career and development.

Course Contents and Notes

This course is run over four practical water-based sessions over the two days.  Each

water-based session is supported by various theory-based short sessions, which provide the essential background knowledge to the Level 1 course.


Sailing Skills Covered:

Rigging and launching a dinghy

Crewing the boat and controlling the Jib sail

Helming controls and controlling the main sail

Tacking and gybing

Control speed, slowing down and stopping

Returning to shore and securing the boat

Harnessing the wind to make the most out of the sails


Theory Knowledge Covered:

Personal clothing and safety equipment

Introduction to weather and forecasts

Rope work and knots used on the boat

Safety procedures and what to do in an

What Can I Do With My RYA Level 1 
Qualification?

Once you have completed your RYA Level 1 Course, you will be able to join Erith Yacht Club as a “Prospective Member”.  This membership status allows you to become a member of the club and take part in the full programme of sailing and social activities on six separate occasions without needing to pay a fee.  As a club, we want to see all sailors join the club and take an active role in all aspects of club life.  Therefore, after your six visits, you will be invited to join the club as a Full Member, which will allow you to become a key holder to the club and have full access to all the facilities and events taking place throughout the year.

You can purchase an RYA Log Book to store your certificate and record your progress throughout the course.  Log books are available to pre-order when booking your course so you have all the resources you need for your course.

Courses cost £170 (£100 for members) and include:

All necessary sailing equipment and clothing

Two days full sailing instruction both water-based and shore-based

Prospective Membership to Erith Yacht Club
