Junior & Youth Sailing (JYS)
How Can I Take Part
JYS?

To support all the youth training activities that take place throughout the year, EYC has is own dedicated Junior & Youth Sailing (JYS) sessions.  These sessions run on Sundays from April to October and offer all youth members the opportunity to get out on the water and take part in organised sailing activities!  As well as general sailing, we provide race coaching with a fully qualified RYA Race Coach on Saturdays and encourage our racers to take part in events and meetings both at the club and at other venues around London as a way to enjoying other venues.

introduction to the sport of sailing in one of our double-handed dinghies with an instructor onboard.  Youth sailors of all abilities are welcome to try out sailing in one of our beginner sessions.  After the beginners session, youth sailors who would like to continue with JYS will need to complete their RYA Stage 1 course, with courses taking place on the last weekend of each month. Once they have gained their RYA Stage 1, they are able to take part in all JYS sessions and practice their sailing skills whilst meeting new friends and sailors!

All JYS sailors will be provided with a log book, which details the plan and learning objectives for each session and provides a place to record attendance and performance.  Throughout the school holidays, there will be further opportunities to take up courses as detailed in the RYA National Youth Sailing Scheme.

A typical JYS session includes a briefing followed by the water-based session. A full debrief at the end of the session allows everyone to record their skills and progression throughout the year.

by either cheque, credit or debit Sailors who are taking part in the beginners session at the start of the month do not need to pay the £30 fee unless they decide to take up further JYS sessions.

What Equipment Is Provided For The
JYS Sessions?

When you arrive at the club, it is essential that all youth sailors register their name at the reception desk and pay their subs for the session.  At either 9:30 or 1:30, a session briefing will take place with the Senior Instructor.  Sailors who arrive after this briefing will not be permitted to take part in the session.  After the briefing, all sailors will need to get changed for sailing and prepare their boat.  Assistance will be provide to sailors who are still learning how to sail, rig and launch their boat.

All sailors will take to the water as a group, which will be supervised by the Senior Instructor and Safety Boats.  A Safety Boat is always on the water when the session is taking place.  We have a safe sailing area on the river that is away from any other boats and vessels on the river.  This area is where our sailing will take place.  At the end of the session, all sailors will return to shore and pack away their kit.  A end of session debriefing will take place after all kit is away to record the progression made throughout the session.

It is essential that all youth sailors sign out before leaving the club so we know that everyone is accounted for.
